2011 LAUGHS FOR HOOTES - JULIA MORRIS JMO FEST

Julia Morris hosted her annual "Laughs for Hooters" on Nov 30, raising money for the National Breast Cancer Association. It was a brilliant night, loads of fun. I was lucky enough to win the manipulated photo section with my "Jo-Mommie Dearest" image. I won a Canon camera worth over $2000. YAY! Now I have to learn how to use it, can't wait.

My friend Beccy Cole recently released the most amazing album title "Songs & Pictures". I did the cover art & an illo for the CD booklet. It was something different for me & I haven't drawn a serious portrait in a long long time.

I have just finished this caricature probably more a portrait digital painting of Jimi Hendrix. I tried to keep it a little looser than the Shane Nicholson painting. I'm still playing around with the digital side, it's all heaps of fun. I can't decide whether I like the white or the pinky background.

I felt the urge to draw late one night a few weeks ago & decided to sketch Shane Nicholson & paint it digitally. After painting for hours I decided I wasn't happy with the likeness & left it. After looking at a photo of Shane yesterday I finally realised what the problem was, even though he has a strong jaw I had made it far too wide. Anyway I am much happier with this result. I love Shane's music & listened to the amazing album Rattlin' Bones while I painted this.

I recently did some digital painting of Australian critters for Newcastle's Blackbutt Reserve. The van is a mobile education van. I had lots of fun doing this job.

I have just returned from the annual Australian Cartoon Assocation's conference & awards "The Stanleys". What an amazing weekend, our special guests were Stan Goldberg (Archie Comics) & the amazingly brilliant Jason Seiler. I was lucky enough to be nominated in the caricature section. Congrats to all the winners, so much fun & talent in one room.

This is my second attempt at a digital painting. I used an old sketch I had of Rowan Atkinson & decided to paint over the top of it. I am really loving digital painting & look at Jason Seiler's work for inspiration. Bring on the Stanley's.

Well yesterday I had the honour of winning the Bald Archy's with Patti's Cake. Tony Abbott may parade around in his red speedos, but my man Bert gets it all off.
The Bald Archy's are currently showing in Sydney at the ABC Studios in Ultimo & will tour other capital cities & regional areas after that. Go check it out, it's heaps of fun ...

It's Bald Archy time again ... this year I did a painting of Bert Newton called "Patti's Cake". I did the sketch sometime ago, however ended up painting it in the week just before the closing date. The BA's are currently in Canberra & will open in Sydney April 1st.

The Newcastle Herald ran a story on Ernest in this weeks paper. I am currently working on the illustrations for the second book in the series titled "The Invasion". Scott Allen (author) & I are also putting together a puzzle & colouring book based on Jesse the Elephant (the 1st book in the series).

I recently completed illustrations for a new book. The book titled Jesse the Elephant is the first in a series on The adventures of Ernest the Little Tug. Here is a note about the book from the author Scott Allen "The “Adventures of Ernest Little Tug” is a series of children’s stories which tell the living history of the world’s greatest harbour, Sydney Harbour. Ernest Little Tug is the cute and friendly star of the stories. He is friend to all the boats on the harbour and always lends a helping hand in times of trouble. His best friend is Teddy the dog who travels with him everywhere and helps out in tricky situations. The many other characters in the stories are based on real life Sydney Ferries, visiting ocean liners or warships, and all books include an account of the True Story upon which the children’s story is based. The first book in the series recounts an event in 1916 when Jesse the elephant was walked through Sydney city from the old Moore Park Zoo and then moved by punt ferry across Sydney Harbour to her new home in Taronga Zoo. My Mum & I took a trip to the Bunker Cartoon Gallery (Coffs Harbour) last Friday where they were hosting an exhibition of female artists. Jules Faber opened the exhibition, there was so much amazing talent & I was lucky enough to meet 2 of the incredible female artists Flossy P (aka Sarah) & Dee Texidor.

I had 2 entries in this year, one of Hamish & Andy giving each other "nipple twists" and this one of Morris Iemma titled "Short Circuit" in reference to the saga of the privatisation of the NSW electricity ... it obviously didn't happen!

Because I do lots of design work, the only time I draw is when I get the occasional commission ... I am now going to do something very novel ... START PRACTICING, I've heard this helps you improve! When I look at the blogs of the greats they all do heaps of sketching .... Anyway I've started with my friend Johnny & I look forward to improving.

NEWCASTLE COUNCIL "DOG LAUNCH"

After weeks of doing what I considered a dream job (creating humorous illustrations of dogs), the van & brochure dog series for the Newcastle City Counctil was launched in Civic Park yesterday. The star of the show was a 15 year old King Charles Spaniel named Kappi, she was one of my subjects & appears (in her younger years) on the van.

Surfest was a great weekend. Besides the brilliant surfing Eclipse Media put on a Waves & Wine festival, everyone had an amazing time. I had a stall set up with caricatures of the surfers (Occy, Mark RIchards, Steph Gilmore & many more) .... I was lucky enough to get the majority of the caricatures signed & meet some of the surfers .... you couldn't ask to meet a nicer group of people.
